Extending the Fallout universe beyond the screen

Fallout Season One was a runaway success on Amazon Prime Video, driving massive fan engagement around its detailed world-building and production design. For Season Two, the challenge was simple: how do we reward that passion and let the audience do more than just watch?

We realized we couldn’t just deliver a typical behind-the-scenes feature. We needed a true extension of the universe, a way for fans to step inside the most iconic locations from both Season One and the new season; an immersive, interactive experience, accessible to everyone on mobile and web.

That's where The World of Fallout came in.

The production of the Fallout TV series relied heavily on our virtual production workflow, where we initially created environments in Unreal Engine to be displayed in real-time on LED volumes for the production team filming the series.

Scaling the Wasteland: World-building with OKO and AWS

For The World of Fallout, we took those original, high-fidelity Unreal assets, optimized them, and recreated the 3D environment sets specifically for the Web using our OKO platform. Working in close collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios, Amazon Studios Tech Operations, and Kilter Films, we built an interactive 360-degree experience that allows fans to explore the Wasteland in a new way.

We laid out each scene using OKO Web, collaboratively working together in a shared connected space to build out each of the experiences. We then used the same underlying rendering technology from OKO Web to deliver a more streamlined application for the final product.

Artists went further, adding lighting and atmospheric effects to recreate the unique mood and ambiance of the show. In some cases, artists recreated entire physical sets, with specific props and set dressing, based on the series references, so fans would feel like they were navigating the actual physical sets.

This was not a simple trick or a novelty. It was a commitment to authenticity, using the real CGI assets created for the series. Fans are not looking at loose interpretations; they’re stepping into the same digital worlds used in the visual effects for the show. This gives each scene a level of accuracy and fidelity that feels true to the Fallout universe and the craft behind it.

The platform features a mix of familiar and brand-new locations. The real magic is what fans find once they're inside.

Every environment is layered with interactive displays featuring a guide character. These function as "Mainframe Terminals," treating fans less like viewers and more like explorers. They unlock rare assets and exclusive content:

  • Early concept art and production secrets.

  • Cast commentary and actor insights from being on set.

  • Technical deep-dives showing how the special effects and massive sets were brought to life.

  • Exclusive clips and bonus content.

The World of Fallout positions fans not as passive spectators, but as active participants in the Fallout universe. It gives them the chance to step inside the sets and spaces in a way the show can’t. They can look around in full 360°, see what’s behind them, and take in the scale and detail of each environment. It becomes a deeper and more rewarding way to connect with the world, its making, and its future, leaving fans feeling like they have truly been there.
